Becklyn Cellars Premier Release of Boutique Wines Made By Mike Smith
Matthew and Amber Denny of Austin, Texas craft small–lot wines with Esteemed Winemaker Mike Smith in the Napa Valley.
Calistoga, CA – Becklyn Cellars is a new wine label releasing its first vintages of 2012 Cabernet and 2013 Sauvignon Blanc on September 9th. Owners Matt and Amber Denny are extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic premiere vintage and to have Mike Smith as their winemaker. This small production of 150 cases makes this wine a rare gem that is sold by allocation only with limited availability.
Winemaker Mike Smith started his career in 2001, working under Thomas Rivers Brown, Mike has become one of the most highly sought after winemakers in the Napa Valley. Mike’s wines were featured on the cover of Wine Spectator’s November 2012 issue in an article highlighting the top 5 cabernet producers in the Napa Valley. MaryAnn Worobiec of Wine Spectator wrote, “Their hard work is resulting in some of the best cabernet in California today.” Also in 2012, three of Mike’s wines were picked in the prestigious “Legends of Napa Valley Definitive Tasting.” Becklyn Cellars’ wines continue to allow Mike Smith to showcase his talents and his “purist” approach to winemaking by selecting high quality fruit from Rutherford and St. Helena Districts and using new French oak to enhance the complexity of the wine.
Matt and Amber Denny of Austin, Texas say, “It’s important to us that while this is a small, allocated only production, it’s not perceived as simply a hobby but rather a premier wine label. We’ll be involved in the business day to day.” Mr. Denny goes on to say, “Truly allocated wines should not cost the buyer a small fortune, but rather reward the buyer for finding the future star.”
The 2012 Becklyn Cabernet is a blend of 3 separate vineyards that create a compelling wine which highlights what Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is all about. Dark ruby in the glass, scents of red and dark fruits, cassis, iron, spices and a slight minerality emanate from the glass. Twenty–Twelve was a very rich vintage, so drink now or stash this one away as it will age exceptionally.
2013 was a perfect year to make a classically styled yet rich Sauvignon Blanc. A slightly less than normal crop on our Masque clone block produced a rich and powerful wine. Straw in color, aromas of Meyer Lemon, quince, honeysuckle and river rocks combine with waves of fruit and natural acidity to create one of the year’s best sauvignon blancs.
The name “Becklyn” comes from a 230 acre horse ranch owned by Matt Denny’s family. The cypress tree logo on the bottle represents a cypress tree planted by his mother, Rebecca Lynn Denny hence Becklyn, before she passed away in 2002. The tree continues to thrive on those 230 acres today.
With only 150 cases produced, these wines will sell out quickly on the release date of September 9th. Available by mailing list only. By signing up at www.becklyncellars.com buyers will have the opportunity to purchase these truly unique wines.
